Description
This photo was taken just after dark on the magnificent Arabia Mountain, a granite outcropping near Lithonia Georgia. Just a few minutes’ drive east of Atlanta, the terrain is otherworldly and while hiking, it’s not hard to imagine that you are scrambling along the hostile surface of on a faraway planet. Arabia Mountain is a former quarry, now preserved as a natural heritage area. Not actually a mountain, it is a monadnock, a geologic formation that has seen the ground around it erode away, leaving the granite mound known today as Arabia Mountain. Arabia Mountain also contains a variety of rare and endangered plants that grow in solution pits, adding vibrant color to the granite surface.
