Description
As the sun sets behind the Augusta Canal headgates, its fiery glow is slowly extinguished by a dense cover of grey clouds, leaving a landscape composed of rich colors and long shadows. A long exposure was used to transform the choppy surface of the canal into a mirrorlike surface that captures the blurred shadows of the canal bank and surrounding foliage, creating a sense of serenity while preserving a sense of motion.
Located in the Savannah Rapids Park, the Augusta Canal headgates were used to regulate flow from the Savannah river into the canal. Originally comprised of seventeen gates, the 1875 headgates facility incorporated rack and pinion gearing which allowed a single gatekeeper to easily raise and lower the gates. (hmbd.org)
