Description
Ambient light enters via skylights at the end of a long corridor, providing dim illumination that fades into shadows in the foreground of the aging cellblock in the Old Jail in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. Serving as the Carbon County jail until 1995, this notorious structure is the site where several Molly Maguire coal miners were incarcerated and executed in a tragic ending to their violent struggle to improve working conditions in Pennsylvania's 19th century coal mines.
Now a museum, visitors can tour its 27 cellblocks and a replica of the gallows used to hang the Molly Maguires. It is a "must see" when visiting Jim Thorpe. If you have any doubts, just ask one of the many ghosts that are rumored to haunt its halls.
