Description
On a rainy late September morning, Reading and Northern Engine #2013 leaves its station in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, beginning an excursion into Lehigh Gorge State Park where it will travel through the magnificent Lehigh Gorge, following the curves of the Lehigh River until it reaches its turn around point at Penn Haven Junction. Along the way, passengers will view awe inspiring scenery as they learn about the rich history of the Lehigh Valley, where the railroad played a vital role in transportation of anthracite coal from coal mines throughout the region. The blue gondola on the siding to the left is used to carry bicycles on select excursions.
The Reading & Northern Railroad offers passenger excursions into the Lehigh Gorge State Park from the former Central Railroad of New Jersey station in historic downtown Jim Thorpe, PA on weekends, holidays, and select weekdays through December. The railroad also operates several special excursions throughout the year, powered by both steam and diesel engines. These trips include our annual Autumn Leaf Excursions from the Reading Outer Station, Port Clinton Station, and Tamaqua Station to Jim Thorpe and back, as well as a variety of rides in coordination with various organizations and communities along our rail lines. https://www.lgsry.com/history
