Description
This photo features Shock’s Mill Bridge, which carries tracks of the Norfolk Southern Railroad across the Susquehanna River between Marietta, Pennsylvania and Wago Junction, Pennsylvania. The photo was taken near sunset using a long exposure, softening colors and smoothing the texture of the water and sky.
The Shock’s Mill Bridge was part of the Atglen & Susquehanna (later known as the Enola low-grade) Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad Originally which opened for freight traffic in 1906. Originally a 28-arch stone bridge, the bridge was damaged by flooding caused by Hurricane Agnes in July 1972. Damaged portions of the bridge were repaired with steel and concrete construction giving it a unique appearance.
