Description
Combining nature’s beauty with the remnants 19th century industrial technology, this photo features the raceway for an abandoned mill that was once used to manufacture cotton rope products on Little River in Woodstock, GA. The raceway is a canal within the banks of the river that was used to divert river water to power the machinery for a mill. Captured at dusk, a relatively long exposure of 3/5 sec with an f/14 aperture was used to capture the evening’s waning light and resulted in the rich colors and smooth appearance of the raceway's water, while retaining the detail of the striated rock formations throughout the scene.
The rope mill produced cotton ropes in the 19th and first half of the 20th century, until its structures were removed, along with other buildings located in the Lake Alatoona flood plain when the US Army Corps of Engineers completed construction on the lake’s hydroelectric plant. The park itself includes ample parking and miles of trails to explore the ruins of the mill and to enjoy the beauty of the Little River and its surroundings.
