Description
The Lehigh River flows through the Lehigh River Gorge near Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. The abandoned Turn Hole Tunnel is visible to the left, with an active railroad bridge at center. The surrounding foliage is a mix of green, yellow, and red, indicating early autumn. This breathtaking area of the Lehigh River is located in the Lehigh Gorge State Park and is accessible via the Lehigh Gorge trail.
In Luzerne and Carbon counties in eastern Pennsylvania, Lehigh Gorge State Park follows the Lehigh River from the outlet of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Francis E. Walter Dam at the northern end, to the town of Jim Thorpe at the southern end of the park. The park is characterized by a deep, steep-walled gorge carved by a river, thick vegetation, rock outcroppings, and waterfalls.
