Description
This photo features an interior view of the historic Stone Mountain Park covered bridge, just a few minutes' drive from Atlanta, Georgia. Taken after dark, the covered bridge creates a tunnel-like passage, with light filtering through the decorative lattice walls. The structure's wooden planks and beams show rich textures and create a pathway leading towards the brightness at the far end. With the roadbed to the left and a walking path to the right, a trip through this covered bridge is a treat for motorists and pedestrians alike. The darkness of the bridge's interior and a long exposure setting on the camera worked to amplify the effect of the park's ample artificial lighting, creating an illusion of daylight beyond the openings in the lattice.
The bridge is located on the eastern side of Stone Mountain and connects Indian Island in Stone Mountain Lake to the mainland.
The bridge was originally constructed in Athens, Georgia to connect College Street and downtown Athens with outlying farm lands across the Oconee River. The bridge served the community for decades, until two severe floods in 1910 and again in 1963 damaged the bridge severely, and caused concern for its ongoing use. In 1965, in the bridge was partially disassembled and moved to its current location. https://stonemountainguide.com/Covered-Bridge.html
Stone Mountain is a quartz monzonite dome monadnock and the site of Stone Mountain Park, 16 miles (26 km) east of Atlanta, Georgia. Stone Mountain features the largest bas-relief sculpture in the world, the Confederate Memorial Carving depicts three Confederate leaders of the Civil War: President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson (on their favorite horses, Blackjack, Traveller, and Little Sorrel, respectively).
